The long ride is done...and was it a long ride. Looking back to the "now", the thought of riding 120 miles seemed so far off in the distant. But that day has come and gone. This weekend is the Luray Olympic Tri, last tune up race before the big show. At times I am nervous, excited and just plain scared. Scared of the unknown. It will me against the clock, to beat the swim cut off, to beat the bike cut off. Then just get thru the marathon by midnight. Then the ink and medal will be the reward, and to say I am an Ironman, next to I am a cancer survivor. This has been a multi-year journey. I hope it will end with a great celebration and happy dance.

The process of Ironman training blows away all your preconceived ideas about what is long and short, impossible or "not for me", because you become an ironman in the training. It's not the race that makes you an Ironman. When you have the ability to do the race, regardless of whether you finish or not, you are an Ironman.

Race day is the birthday party after finishing another year; you'll be that year older regardless of whether you get to blow out the candles and get a piece of cake. It is your day to celebrate the fact that you achieved the training. We all want to get our piece of cake and finish the day strong. You are an ironman on that day regardless of whether you finish.

Remember on race day, it's your party. Stay upright and always move forward. I believe in you.
